Sargent Study

A John Singer Sargent study. One of, if not the, greatest portrait painter that ever lived.

Mine's the left, of course.

FMP: Vis Dev

Test imagery to establish the final look of the short. I did a couple of renders, and painted in the fog and backgrounds in Photoshop.

Life Drawing

Tonight's life drawing. I've been doing a fair bit of drawing/painting recently, as you can tell from my posts. A voice in my brain's been nagging me recently to drop everything but my traditional stuff (drawing and painting). I'm trying to mute him.

Painting

Portrait of Dane Dehaan. Wojtek Fus is inspiring the hell out of me at the moment, a craftsman who made an incredible transition over the period of several years. Check. Him. Out.

Featured on the Animation Mentor Blog!!!

So I wrote to Animation Mentor asking whether they would have me on their blog with a shot I'd animated with Stewart, reviewing the rig for them, and they said yes!

He's a great rig, and Animation Mentor are a famous school!

Life Drawing

Life drawing is better than anything; it's literally the best thing.

Painting

Having got into the life drawing swing, I decided to paint something. Haven't painted in Photoshop for many months, so this was a bit surprising. Whenever I paint or draw, I often want to forget all my animation stuff and just work traditionally.

This piece/style was inspired by the phenomenal Wojtek Fus, who I found on Deviantart ages ago. He is very good. Check his work here: http://wojciechfus.deviantart.com/

Life Drawing

Drew for the first time in ages last week; these are this week's drawings. Sometimes I wonder if I should just scrap everything and just spend all my time drawing, because then I'd be a hell of a lot better at drawing.

Tenebris Character Setup: Progress

My progress with my character setup for Tenebris. I might make a video of me demoing his controls in Maya once I've painted some basics weights, or just a run/walk cycle.

This is my FMP (final major project), and its going okay currently. I've got two other projects on the go, so plenty of work to keep me out of trouble!

Innovations WIP: Lucinda

This is a wip for my NCCA Innovations assignment. In this self-authored brief  'Investigating character modelling using non-orthographic reference imagery of various characters', I aim to do just that: explore modelling characters with no orthographics loaded onto image planes. Instead, the artist (myself in this case) works from a sort of character mood board with various different characters of various different styles featured, and incorporates different elements which they like into their sculpt.

Having begun the process on this model, I've realised that the 'character board' is used less that I anticipated, and the more natural process appears to be a design whilst sculpting workflow, with the character board informing the artist now and again.

I will upload the mood board with the final character. For now, this is my work in progress.

Tenebris: Beginning character set-up

Beginning to setup Tenebris. I'm using what I learnt rigging Cindy for this rig. This will ultimately be the most simple rig known to man, but I just need to make something that I can just about animate with. I would love to get good at rigging, and actually find it quite interesting, but I find it really frustrating when it doesn't work ( which is either just periodically, or whenever I try something vaguely adventurous). I'd much rather spend my time on the animation process.

Character Sculpt: Tenebris Update

Here's where I am at with Tenebris, the protagonist for a short animation which I am making. Coming to this blog, this summer, you will be able to watch my next short film, titled Dark Flight.

Body Mechanics Test

Hey there, here is the render of a short body mechanics test that I have been working on. I received some great critique from www.11secondclub.com whilst making this, and I am thankful to everyone who contributed. Enjoy, and critique it as well; it's never too late to re-render!
